Today marks International Women’s Day. Like many, here at Claritas, we look forward to a time when there will be an everyday recognition of the need for gender equality and diversity in the workplace.

Name, job title, and how many years have you been in Claritas?

Hi, I’m Sarah McDonald and I’m a Manager here at Claritas. I joined the team 7 years ago in 2015.

Tell us a little bit more about your role?

My role mainly consists of looking after the finance side of things here at Claritas. I also look after graduate recruitment and employment related securities compliance.

Describe your career progression and what has supported you to progress to this position?

My first role was with a small accountancy practice, where I gained lots of experience in preparing basic accounts and general secretarial and office duties. Since then, I joined Claritas firstly as an Office Manager, progressing into the Manager role I have today. I have had lots of support from colleagues and family along the way, which is so important and appreciated.

How do you feel Claritas has supported you to grow professionally and personally?

Claritas have been incredibly supportive with the progression of my role, from helping me to gain professional qualifications to fantastic mentoring along the way. This has helped me to grow in confidence and gain the necessary skills to support the team as we grow from strength to strength.

What barriers have you personally faced in your career and what advice would you give to others to overcome these?

The biggest barrier I have faced, was not knowing what career I wanted to do when I left school. I have always enjoyed numbers, so figured this was a good place to start! I think it is so important to enjoy your work, as you will learn so much more along the way.

What has been the highlight of your career?

The highlight of my career was gaining my role at Claritas. Working previously in the same job at a small accountancy practice for over 16 years, I was very comfortable within that environment, however, I had decided the time had come to look for a new challenge and it was the best decision I’ve ever made.

What advice would you give to the next generation of females wanting to grow into your position?

Don’t be afraid to push yourself out of your comfort zone, apply for your dream job – you may surprise yourself with what you can achieve!
