Who needs to know this?

Our partners at Markel Tax handle a wide range of HMRC enquiries. The team can be engaged directly or work with professional advisers, normally accountants, to achieve the right outcome.

For accountants and other tax advisers, the team at Markel Tax seek to supplement the services you offer your clients and as an independent firm they only offer specialist tax services, and would therefore never threaten your existing client relationship.

Markel Tax encourages informal telephone discussions at the outset and will offer their initial view on a no-obligation and confidential basis.

Why is it important?

Markel Tax has many years of experience in dealing with HMRC enquiries and disputes and have the expertise to achieve the right outcomes for their clients.

When handling a tax enquiry, the team at Markel Tax will:

  • Check that the enquiry is valid
  • Check that all the information requested by HMRC relates to the entity under enquiry and that the information is reasonably required to check the tax position
  • Propose an alternative way to satisfy HMRC if the specific information HMRC have requested is not available
  • Ensure that the calculation of any additional tax due includes any claims, reliefs, and allowances available to the taxpayer
  • Consider the behaviour of the taxpayer and align all communications to that behaviour throughout the enquiry correspondence. This ensures that the any penalty sought by HMRC is appropriate to the circumstances of the case
  • Manage any HMRC delay and prompt action from HMRC when this is necessary

Please contact James Cordiner, James.Cordiner@markel.com, tax investigation manager at Markel Tax, , for a no obligation and confidential discussion about a HMRC enquiry.
